THE Portal

The installation "Portal" is a three-metre high luminous glass door, which is framed by a metal frame and grounded by a solid base. The contour of the door is illuminated by neon, creating a kind of hovering effect.

The art object is the result of Lidia Russkova-Hasaya's many years of research in the fields of art history, symbolism, urbanism and architecture. In the artist's interpretation, the door becomes a symbol of a higher order. When interacting with it, one has an irresistible desire to enter, but the door cannot be opened - it simply lacks a handle.

"Portal" is installed in Venice for a reason. Since the Renaissance, doors in Italy have been an important decorative element and one of the main indicators of status. The entrance door gives a clear idea of what to expect inside the space. Doors specifically in Venice have always been special - not only from a decorative point of view, but also from a functional one. For example, doors leading into the water or specially designed for agua alta.

Lidia interacts not only with the city, but also with the space of the international cultural centre CREA, located on the territory of the existing docks for the repair of gondolas and motorboats. That is why the artist has chosen metal, glass and neon for the installation. The industrial materials are transformed into a work of art, completely changing their meaning, just as the "Portal" itself ceases to be a simple door and becomes a meaningful symbol with many interpretations. An important factor in the choice of materials was the application of sustainability principles.
